United States President Donald Trump’s abrupt decision to fire John Bolton as national security adviser seems to have please the Iranian regime. On Wednesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urged Washington to “put warmongers aside,” while a government spokesman expressed hope that the US government would adopt a “less biased” attitude toward Iran in the wake of Bolton’s dismissal.
John Bolton was one of the architects of regime change in Iraq and has been advocating for a similar US strategy for Iran for over a decade. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif previously expressed concern that Bolton and other members of a hawkish “B team” in the Trump administration may convince Trump to start a war with Iran.
Analysts are speculating that Trump may be planning to meet with Rouhani on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly this month in New York.
