At least 33 people were killed and thousands left homeless in violence over the weekend between tribal people and Bangladeshi settlers in northeast India, the police and hospital authorities said. Violence between members of the Bodo tribe and Muslim immigrants broke out Friday in Rowta in the Udalguri district of Assam State, about 60 miles north of Dispur, the state capital.
