Fresh from a bruising encounter with the judiciary over its MPs’ choice of president, Turkey’s ruling party today proposed changing the constitution in favour of a directly elected head of state. The plan came as parliament prepared to vote on dissolving itself and holding elections as early as June 24, and is a bid to calm the political crisis over the blocked selection of the foreign minister, Abdullah Gul, as a presidential candidate.
