Gunmen killed at least three people Wednesday when they opened fire on hundreds of opposition supporters outside the headquarters of Uganda’s largest traditional kingdoms, a senior official said. There were reports that at least two other supporters of opposition leader Kizza Besigye were killed in a separate location, said Dan Mulika, prime minister of the Buganda kingdom. Old Kampala’s Regional Police Commander Okot Araa, however, said only two people were killed and four others were seriously injured in the incident that occurred as Besigye posed for photographs with Buganda King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
