Sudanese government officials and rebels from the country’s war-wracked Darfur region opened a new round of peace talks Tuesday, with African Union mediators calling for an end to the killing of civilians. Despite more than a year of negotiations, the government and rebel groups have continued fighting in Sudan’s western Darfur region.
