British Home Secretary Charles Clarke has admitted that he urged police chiefs to encourage MPs, in a bid to bolster his flagging proposed anti-terror laws. The government was defeated Wednesday on a plan to detain security suspects for up to 90 days without charge, and has since come under fire — including from their own fellow Labour Party MPs — for the way in which the case for the 90-day period was made by the police.
