Syria has suddenly increased the inspections it imposes on commercial traffic coming from Lebanon, leaving hundreds of trucks stranded at border crossings for more than a week, and adding a bitter trade dispute to the already strained relationship between the two countries. Syrian officials say that border guards are carrying out searches for weapons and explosives, and that Syria is simply securing its borders and hunting for would-be insurgents, just as the United States has pressed it to do in recent months.
