Rigoberto Alanis, 18, of Rio Grande City, lay on a stretcher on the tarmac at McAllen-Miller International Airport with what appeared to be a large shard of glass protruding from his right cheek. Screams of “help me” from another person on a stretcher cut the through the din of idling emergency response vehicles. “Everything’s normal but I’m unable to walk,” Alanis said, explaining his role as one of the 50 “victims” Friday morning in a full-scale mass-casualty drill involving at least three area hospitals, the FBI and Transportation Security Administration, the McAllen police and fire departments, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Lessons learned from the exercise will be used to make changes to the Airport Emergency Plan. The FAA will receive a report and videotape on the drill and must approve the plan. Full Story
