Residents of Inhaminga, capital of the central Mozambican district of Cheringoma, experienced moments of panic on Thursday, as a riot police unit, and armed members of the former rebel movement Renamo exchanged gunfire. Traffic in the streets of Inhaminga came to a halt, and shops, offices and public institutions closed their doors. People left their homes and fled into the bush.
