In an almost military scenario, 25,000 police backed by helicopters and patrol cars have been deployed throughout the capital and eight central states in an attempt to curb heavy crime. But so far, arrests have fallen short of expectations, with most of them for robbery or simple possession of drugs. The idea is that from now on, thousands of officers will take to the streets of the capital and the states of Puebla, Hidalgo, Morelos, Michoacan, Queretaro, Mexico, Tlaxcala and Veracruz in periodic surprise operations, something some security experts say will be difficult to carry out.
