Abul Abbas, the Palestinian who planned the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro passenger ship in which a wheelchair-bound American tourist was killed and thrown overboard, has died in U.S. custody of natural causes, coalition officials confirmed Wednesday. He was 56. U.S. officials said Abbas died Monday in Baghdad, where he was captured by U.S. forces in April, nearly two decades after being convicted in absentia by an Italian court and sentenced to life in prison for the hijacking.
