Insurgents launched bold twin assaults on Iraqi security positions in the town of Fallujah, sparking fierce battles that left 27 dead and dozens wounded. On the political front, a prominent Governing Council member, Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani, said he expected the interim legislative body to run Iraq if national elections are not held before the US-led occupation ends on June 30. The synchronised raids by masked gunmen on a police and a paramilitary station in Fallujah followed back-to-back bombings that left more than 100 people dead on Tuesday and Wednesday. The attacks left at least 23 policemen and four attackers dead, the US military said. Police and medics earlier put the death toll at 23.
