A top Egyptian envoy said he was hopeful after meeting with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on ways to revive the peace process, as a Palestinian teenager was shot dead by Israeli troops in the West Bank. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s top adviser, Osama al-Baz, said his meeting with Arafat was encouraging in terms of resuming contacts with Israel. Palestinians were also marking the 39th anniversary of Fatah. Although the ruling party was officially founded in Kuwait in the late 1950s, Palestinians generally consider its birth to be on the day of the group’s first attack in Israel — January 1, 1965.
