Hundreds of Turkish students protesting against state control of the country’s universities clashed with riot police in Istanbul and the capital Ankara, leaving at least 60 people injured. The protests marked the 22nd anniversary of the creation, one year after the 1980 military coup, of the Higher Education Council (YOK), which put formerly autonomous universities under tight state control. More than 1,000 students rallied in a central Ankara square and threw stones at police, who were out in force. They were dispersed with tear gas, water cannons and truncheons. Ten demonstrators were detained during the protest, in which 50 protestors, 10 police officers and a reporter were injured, the Anatolia news agency reported. Those arrested were still being held later in the evening. A group of demonstrators gathered in the city center to call for their release before dispersing without incident. Full Story
