An American Special Operations soldier died of injuries he received Wednesday during military operations in eastern Afghanistan, a statement from the United States Central Command said tonight. The statement said the soldier was injured during operations near the town of Orgun in Paktika Province, but did not identify the soldier or say how he was hurt. The American soldier died during what appears to be an offensive by Taliban fighters in the province, which lies on the border with Pakistan. Also on Wednesday, an Afghan police chief accused an American helicopter of firing on a civilian vehicle in the same area, Reuters reported. The local Afghan police chief said three people, including one woman, were wounded in the incident. An American military official said an Apache attack helicopter opened fire with rockets and a 30-millimeter cannon on a truck that was seen “speeding aggressively” toward allied forces, Reuters reported.
