Fifteen European tourists held hostage by armed rebels for over four months in Algeria’s Sahara desert could be freed soon after military authorities made contact with their captors, local media reported on Thursday. The authorities promised the hostage-takers a safe way out if they released the 10 Germans, four Swiss and one Dutchman unharmed, the daily El Watan said quoting security sources. The Islamic rebels accepted the offer in a handwritten note handed over by a nomad but demanded guarantees for their safety, the newspaper added. The report could not be officially confirmed. There has been no word about the fate of the 15 holidaymakers since another group of 17 tourists was freed on May 13 by Algerian commandos. Full Story
