A Filipino Muslim bomb expert linked to al-Qaeda’s South-East Asian chapter pleaded guilty in court today to carrying out a deadly 2000 train bombing in the Philippine capital. Saifullah Mukhlis Yunos exclaimed “yes” through an interpreter when told he could be punished by death for his admission to the blast, which had killed 22 people and injured 100 others. He pleaded guilty to charges of attempted and multiple murder. A pre-trial hearing has been set for later this month. Prosecutors had said Yunos was the head of a crack terror squad of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the country’s biggest Muslim separatist group, and that the bomb attack was financed by the Jemaah Islamiah (JI). The JI is said to be the South-East Asian chapter of the al-Qaeda network of Osama bin laden. Yunos allegedly carried out the attack with an Indonesian self-confessed JI bomb expert Fathur Rohman al-Ghozi, now serving a 17 year jail term in Manila for explosives possession. Full Story
