The Indonesian military says it has made further progress in its campaign against separatist rebels in the northern province of Aceh as civilians stream into camps to escape the fighting. “We are continuing to besiege Gam [rebel] bases and push them into a corner,” army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Yani Basuki Basuki told the French news agency AFP. Local people say government forces have fired mortar rounds on rebel strongholds around the town of Bireun in northern Aceh. The Indonesian Government imposed martial law in the province four weeks ago and launched a major military campaign against the Free Aceh Movement (Gam) insurgents, who have been fighting for independence since 1976.
