Three people died on Friday when a car bomb exploded in the northern Spanish region of Navarre, in an attack which local government officials said bore the hallmarks of Basque separatist group ETA. The officials said at least two police officers were among the dead and several people were also wounded. The attack comes just after Sunday’s nationwide municipal elections, the first since Madrid banned the radical separatist party Batasuna on the grounds it formed part of ETA, which is listed as terrorist by the United States and European Union. “The attack was made against some national police who were …trying to renew their identity documents,” Miguel Sanz, head of the regional government in Navarre, told state radio. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar immediately canceled a planned visit to Russia. Navarre borders Spain’s northern Basque region but is claimed by ETA as part of a Basque homeland straddling the border with France.
