The Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka have been accused of carrying out attacks on their political opponents under the cover of the country’s ceasefire agreement. The killing of a local Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) leader in the northern Jaffna region on Saturday took the total number of politicians and army informants killed over the last year to 11. The Tamil parties allege that by eliminating their local leaders, the Tigers aim to establish control over local councils and regions, and to send a warning message to rival party cadres. EPDP leader Douglas Devananda accused the Tigers of carrying out carefully planned attacks on members of his and other Tamil parties.
