Israeli troops on Thursday shot dead a Palestinian man in a West Bank city under curfew and arrested five militants planning suicide attacks during the Jewish Passover, an army spokesman said. Palestinian witnesses and medics said Yusuf Yahya, 21, was shot several times after being spotted on a Tulkarm street by Israeli forces. They said Yahya had no link with militants fighting against Israel for independence since September 2000. An Israeli army spokesman said he was shot after he threw two petrol bombs at patrolling troops and as he was preparing to ignite a third. The army said it imposed the curfew while searching for a suicide bombing cell, and arrested four members of Islamic Jihad including a woman courier who was supposed to bring explosives into Israel for use by a bomber, who was not found.
