The killings, disappearances and beatings that have terrorized Chechen civilians for much of the last decade show no signs of stopping despite Kremlin assurances that peace is returning to the war-ravaged republic. A leaked report on crime statistics compiled by the pro-Moscow government in Chechnya suggests Chechens still are killed or disappear at rates far greater than anywhere else in Russia. The report was publicized Monday by Human Rights Watch. In the first two months of this year, the Chechen government registered 70 murders and 126 abductions, said Anna Neistat, head of the Moscow office of Human Rights Watch. Another crime report said 1,132 Chechen civilians were killed last year – compared with 1,275 in Moscow, which has at least 10 times the population. Full Story
