The web of terror stretches far beyond bombs and destroying buildings — cyber-war is now part of that repertoire. “This is why the United States government is telling people to keep their gas tanks full, keep about $200 in their wallet and have food in their house,” said Toronto Fire Division Chief Ernie Yakiwchuk. “Your bank card will not work if they take out the critical infrastructure for information networks,” he said. “Cyber-terrorism is one of the biggest things they’re spending money on in the U.S. Everyone is trying to take down their network.” Cyber-attacks target information and communications technologies in three different ways: Hacking a computer system “through the wires” alone, the tried-and-true method of bombing the infrastructure, or an inside job by terrorists helped by someone with access to the system.
