Police in Greece have arrested a number of people allegedly linked to the country’s oldest and biggest terror group, the Popular Revolutionary Struggle (ELA), which is blamed for scores of bombings and two killings over the past two decades. The operation followed months of investigation into the files of the former East German secret police, the Stasi, which monitored links between Greek nationals and the international terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, known as Carlos the Jackal. The arrests began in the early hours of yesterday when Angeletos Kanas, mayor of the Aegean island of Kimolos, was detained in Athens. He had travelled to the Greek capital to consult his lawyer after reports appeared in the media of his imminent detention.
