In July of this year, the Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York suffered a ransomware attack that has resulted in the permanent loss of certain patient data. After the malware encrypted the hospital’s patient files, the hospital launched an investigation into the incident and tried to recover the data, which implies that no ransom was paid.
Unfortunately, the hospital has acknowledged that “on September 4, 2019, the investigation confirmed that due to the malware, and despite exhaustive efforts by the Hospital to recover the data, certain patient data was unrecoverable.” The hospital has not indicated how many patients are affected by the data loss.
