A new report by Akamai shows that the most popular companies targeted in phishing campaigns are Microsoft, PayPal, DHL, and Dropbox, which together accounted for 42.63% of all observed phishing domains. Microsoft, which accounted for 21.88% of domains alone, is highly popular among cybercriminals selling Phishing as a service (PaaS) kits on underground marketplaces, with the brand being linked to 62 different kits, far more than any other company.
PayPal was linked to 9.37% domains and 14 kit variants; DHL to 8.79% domains and 7 kit variants; and Dropbox to 2.59% domains and 11 kit variants. The study highlights how phishing attacks have evolved to become much more than an email-based threat, with campaigns increasingly targeting mobile devices and social media platforms as well.
