In the wake of its victory over ISIS in Syria, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Monday asked the international community to establish a special tribunal in Syria for the prosecution of “terrorists”.
The SDF stated that such a tribunal would allow for trials against Islamic State fighters to be “conducted fairly and in accordance with international law and human rights covenants and charters.” According to the Kurdish-led force, earlier calls for the establishment of such a tribunal received no response.
Among the thousands of ISIS fighters detained by the SDF are many foreign nationals whose home countries are reluctant to repatriate them. In the absence of an international tribunal, it is unclear what will happen to the militants.
