After weeks of battle, a spokesman of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Saturday finally issued a declaration of victory over Islamic State in Baghouz, the last village in Syria that was still under ISIS control.
Analysts have warned that the defeat of ISIS in Syria is far from a complete victory over the terror group, which continues to pose a significant threat in the region and abroad. In various countries, including Egypt and Afghanistan, groups linked to ISIS are still active, while Islamic State itself is experiencing a resurgence in the northern parts of Iraq, a country where the group was officially defeated by government forces about a year ago.
