Fake news and misinformation thrives because it takes an impossible amount of time and resources to fact check, address every lie and fix every bad narrative. Research indicates that fake news also spreads more quickly than accurately sourced articles. By targeting the sources rather than the stories, however, researchers are hoping to improve the toolset of actors fighting against fake news. Towards this end, researchers are developing AI software to sort news stories by “factuality” and political bias. The broader goal for this software is to extend it into other languages and other searchable features beyond simple left-right political bias, so it can also provide insights into other possible analytical divisions like islamist vs. secular divides.
