Poland has been inviting the US to open a permanent base in the country since the second Bush administration, and the US is increasingly considering the possibility under the Trump administration. Following a meeting with the Polish president, Trump stated, “Poland is willing to make a very major contribution to the United States to come in and have a presence in Poland. If they’re willing to do that, it’s something we will certainly talk about.” Poland has played an increasingly significant role in NATO positioning against Russia following the 2014 invasion of Crimea, and has been home to a growing number of deployed troops displaying US rapid deployment capabilities in order to deter Russia.
