The House of Commons Defense Committee has called upon UK ministers to be “extremely wary” of Russia’s military intentions and capabilities in the Arctic region, and to expand the country’s own arctic military capabilities. The report highlights the “tenfold increase in Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic” that is “currently equaling or surpassing Cold War levels.” It also notes that reductions in the UK’s anti-submarine capabilities now mean that there are not enough vessels available, and that those that are in service are already “committed to standing tasks elsewhere.”
