Yesterday, CEO Elon Musk announced plans to open a fourth ‘Gigafactory’ in Berlin, Germany. Other factory locations currently include the Gigafactory battery plant in Nevada, a charging equipment and future Tesla Solar Roof factory in New York and Shanghai. Musk stated that he chose Germany due to its reputation for exceptional engineering, and Berlin for its art.
Shortly before the announcement, Musk was awarded “Das Goldene Lenkrad” (“Golden Steering Wheel Award”) by Bild, a German tabloid newspaper. Musk has been planning on establishing a European factory for years, and after acquiring German automation design first Grohmann engineering, began to consider Berlin as a potential location. The new location could help Musk spread Tesla into Europe more effectively, avoiding the complications of car exports overseas and trade and tariffs.
