Since the Justice and Development Party (AKP) won a considerable victory in recent parliamentary elections during July 2007 in Turkey and their candidate Abdullah Gul was elected President, many in Turkey are waiting to see what direction the AKP takes the country. Prime Minister Recep Erdogan has pledged to work for all the Turkish people and not just for AKP constituents with continuing both economic and political reforms.

As part of this process, the Turkish government is drafting a new constitution to bring Turkey more into line with the current standards of democracy. The current constitution is a result of the political climate following the 1980 military coup in the country. In recent years, there have been calls for more civilian controls to be imparted into Turkish governance as part of democratic reforms.
