Bombs exploded at four court houses in northern provinces of Spain’s Basque region on October 25 . ETA , the region’s separatist organization, called its preferred news agency, Gara, to warn of the final blast, to claim responsibility for the attack, and to claim self-determination for the region. The blasts are likely timed to a trial of ETA suspects that is set to begin in Spain’s National Court later this week.

Interestingly, ETA called in a warning only for the fourth blast, which is being called an “incendiary device” not a bomb and which was placed in Navarra province, which is not part of the Basque region but rather an autonomous region. The first three blasts did take place within the Basque region. However, ETA’s goal is to encompass all four regions of northern Spain and three more in southern France into a unified Basqueland.
