Twenty-two Sudanese soldiers were killed and 45 wounded in fighting with former rebels in Abyei, the town at the centre of an oil district claimed by north and south, an army commander said Wednesday. “From our side, as what was reported, 22 people were killed and 45 injured,” Brigadier General Muntasir Sabier, commander of government troops in Abyei, told AFP by telephone one day after the fighting.
