Some 6,600 illegal immigrants were licensed to work in the security industry, the home secretary admitted in the House of Commons today. Jacqui Smith announced the findings of an investigation into how many illegal workers were in sensitive posts. The inquiry began soon after she took office and discovered that the Security Industry Authority (SIA) had not been checking whether prospective security employees had the right to work in the UK.
