India’s biggest company, Reliance Industries, said Monday it had been forced to temporarily scale back plans to open thousands of supermarkets after angry protests from small store owners. The company said it had revised its plans for two Indian states — Uttar Pradesh in the north and communist-ruled West Bengal in the east — due to local demonstrations and opposition from state officials.
