Mbeki still in contention for new term
The race is on for the presidency of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress after a party conference left the door open for incumbent Thabo Mbeki to contest a third five-year term. In what some interpret as an Mbeki victory and others a setback amid a divisive succession battle, the ANC expressed a non-committal “preference” at the weekend for the party leader and head of state to be the same person.
