Tens of thousands of nurses, teachers and other public service workers took to the streets throughout South Africa on Friday to press their demands for a 12 percent pay increase. The trade unions representing more than 1 million workers, including police and prison officers and ambulance drivers, have threatened an indefinite, all-out strike starting June 1 if the government does not agree to their demands.
