President Traian Basescu said Friday he would not resign, a day after he was suspended by Romania’s parliament pending an impeachment referendum amid opposition allegations that he abused his position. Basescu — who had warned he would step down and run for a new term if lawmakers voted to suspend him — said Friday that he had changed his mind, and that resigning would prolong the political turmoil because elections would not be able to be organized for several months.
