The al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb leader Abdelmalek Droukdel and seven other members of the terrorist organisation were sentenced to death in absentia by the court in Tizi-Ouzou, Liberte reported on Thursday (March 22nd). Droukdel, also known as Abou Mossaad Abd el-Woudoud, reportedly supervised the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC)’s transformation into an al-Qaeda organisation. The suspected terrorists were charged with establishing an armed gang, destruction of public property with explosives and attempted robbery. According to El Khabar, the tribunal in Skikda sentenced in absentia twelve other former GSPC leaders still in hiding, to capital punishment for terror attacks carried out in the eastern part of the country.
