Police shot five Maoists in the forested region of southern Chhattisgarh on Saturday during a gun battle that lasted for two hours, officials said. The encounter took place in the remote part of Bijapur, 510 km south of the state capital Raipur, where Maoist guerrillas carried out the biggest assault on a police camp on March 15, killing 55 policemen.
