African Union commission chief Alpha Oumar Konare has warned that chaos would prevail in Somalia without the rapid deployment of a peacekeeping force, while the US offered to give air support. A 7,600-strong AU force was meant to be sent to Somalia by the end of this month but it has been held up by the reluctance of member states to commit troops to a country which has been a byword for anarchy for the last 16 years.
