Troops fanned out into the remote jungles of the northeast yesterday in a major crackdown on separatist rebels blamed for a wave of ethnic attacks that have killed 69 people. The counter-insurgency operation in Assam came as large numbers of ethnic minority Hindi-speaking migrant workers from eastern state of Bihar – who have been the main target of the rebels – were fleeing the state.
