A high-tech unit from the South Carolina Army National Guard was put in charge last month of organizing the Army’s defense of the Washington area from potentially threatening aircraft. The unit’s day-to-day operations chief, Col. John Buckley, maintains a purposeful lack of clarity because of the sensitivity of the mission. His staff works in a secret location in the area of the capital and some planning for the unit takes place in South Carolina, he said.
