Outgoing UN chief Kofi Annan remains concerned about the volatile situation in Bangladesh in the run-up to next month’s parliamentary elections, his spokesman said. Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the secretary general, who steps down at the end of the month after 10 years in office, urged the main political parties of the country “to work to overcome their differences in the interest of democracy.” Earlier Friday, hundreds of supporters loyal to former military strongman General Hussain Mohammad Ershad went on a rampage after a court upheld a verdict against him in a corruption case, police said.
