Fiji Coup Leader Gets Signs of Support
The leader of Fiji’s coup received signs of domestic support from tribal chiefs and a major opposition party Friday, but the British Commonwealth suspended the Pacific island nation in the latest international repudiation of the caretaker government. The Pacific island nation’s powerful tribal chiefs indicated they would meet Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who hopes the group will recognize his government, thereby boosting his credibility and standing among the indigenous Fijian majority. Bainimarama also received qualified support from Mahendra Chaudhry, whose opposition Labour Party has its power base among the large ethnic Indian minority. Full Story
