Some 35,000 Iraqi Christians have fled to Syria as a result of death threats by religious zealots since the ousting of former President Saddam Hussein in 2003, Iraqi sources in Damascus said. Emanuel Khoshba, head of the office of the Assyrian and Democratic Movement in Syria, said that Iraqi Christians continue to flee to Syria in large numbers. “In 2004, the number of Iraqi Christians who fled to Syria stood at 20,000; now [in 2006] it has reached 35,000 and it’s likely to increase further,” Khoshba said.
