Since 1947, the world has produced an estimated 100 million Kalashnikov assault rifles, the weapon of choice for insurgencies and criminal gangs. But for Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, that’s not enough. With the help of the Russians, Chávez says, his country will open a factory to build the legendary avtomat Kalashnikova or AK-style rifles that could begin producing the weapons around 2009.
