The shops are nearly empty, electricity is available for an hour a day and only a few telephone lines work in the besieged Sri Lankan town of Jaffna. Cut off for a week by fighting between Sri Lanka’s government and Tamil Tiger rebels, life on the northern Jaffna peninsula is hard.
